Girl Boss.
As women we start these odd trends that defeat a lot of what we have worked so hard to achieve.
Even more confusing, most of the women who embrace this term and use it frequently consider themselves feminists. How is referring to yourself as a “Girl Boss” or “Lady Boss” supporting the equality of sexes?
Let’s flip this…
I would have a hard time respecting and working for someone who referred to himself as “Boy Boss”.
Why do we women feel the need to do things like putting “cutesy” names on ourselves to feel empowered? Why is this term now a fashionable clothing item that women are proud to wear?
You are trying to set yourself apart and draw attention to the fact that you are a woman and a “boss”. I get it, you are proud, but you aren’t gaining respect using “Girl Boss” as your title. I don’t feel empowered as a woman when other women do that.
You are wanting to draw attention to the things that you overcame to get to where you are. Yet, choosing a label to highlight such things contradicts the goal you’re trying to accomplish. How is it supporting your belief in equality?
We didn’t need Martin Luther King, Jr to wear a t-shirt saying “Black Leader” in order to respect everything he overcame to create an empowering movement.
When I first heard the term Girl Boss I was immediately irritated and I didn’t truly understand why right away. First, I’ve always been a proponent for equality and this did not represent that. Secondly, I do not think terms like this are “cute”.
I have worked very hard to achieve a level of leadership as a businesswoman. I’ve also worked very hard as an entrepreneur; paving my own path. And, slapping a label on myself such as Girl Boss doesn’t draw the respect I deserve. I often wonder if it confuses people as much as it does me.
Why does she call herself that?
What does that mean?
Labels are not my thing and they only create division. If you want to connect with people leave out the labels. Show people who you are by being who you are. Work hard and let your actions speak for themselves.

I’m a little confused? Where are you seeing the label “Girl Boss” trending? I’m on social media ALOT and never came across it. I have, however, heard of Ladyboss. But that is a completely different term than what your article described. A Ladyboss is brand name to describe a popular community of women led by Kaelin Poulin empowered to support each other through their weight loss journey. And if you ever meet a Ladyboss, or hear someone refer to themselves as such, the last thing you will want to do is cringe. #Ladyboss
