Our sunroom was the part of our home that ‘sealed the deal’. It took us 2 years of looking and many home tours. We also had many disagreements due to conflicting ideas of what our home should look like. Finally, 7 years ago we settled on this home.
When we walked through the front door of the house I knew this was ‘the one’. Similar to how people say you just know with your spouse…well, that was me with house hunting. Ha! Then, we walked through the sliding door to the sunroom and I instantly said (in my head, because of course I can’t just let everyone know what I’m thinking 😉 ) “yes! This is definitely our home!”
I was a few years into my photography business and I needed more space for sessions. Particularly I wanted a spot with better natural light. This sunroom was perfect for that and my other projects of painting and design. It was a 4 season room, but we thought we wouldn’t spend much time in there during the winter because North Dakota winters are so cold. However, it has heated flooring and this stunning fireplace that warms it up quickly for photo sessions, so we do spend time out here year round!
Sunroom Design Phases
I went through a few different phases of designing our sunroom.
Lucky for me, Eric is not big into design but loves seeing what I come up with. He throws in ideas, but trusts me with most design aspects of our home. One specific sunroom design phase was where I chose to bring in more blues and teals to create an island and beach feel. I quickly got out of that phase because it was too bold for my taste. I wanted a more neutral pallet for the sunroom design, where I could change out accent pieces easier.
Sunroom Design Drop Cloth Curtains
The massive Anderson windows were our favorite part of the sunroom design and it took me a long time to decide how to dress them. I used to tack sheets up when the light was too harsh and now we have these gorgeous inexpensive ‘curtains’. Due to the size of the windows it was expensive to have them dressed professionally and I knew there had to be a way to get creative and make them functional. I then found Liz Marie Galven’s curtain inspiration.
I purchased these rods from Bed Bath and Beyond and Eric helped me hang them. I then purchased 4 painter drop cloths and steamed them until the creases came out. Hanging them was a cinch thanks to the iron clips I purchased from Bed Bath and Beyond as well.
I love the cozy feel of how our sunroom design turned out and the functionality of the drop cloth curtains. It is so nice to have these curtains up when I have photo sessions or just want to take a snooze! It is the coziest sunroom that is well loved all year round. The best days are when we have both sunroom doors wide open with the screens closed as we listen to the birds sing and trees blowing in the wind. I never knew how much I wanted a sunroom until I walked into this room, and now it’s hard to imagine not having one!

Your sun room looks absolutely beautiful. I agree that the best word to describe the overall look is ‘cozy’. It makes me want to rethink what is on my ‘must-have’ list when I eventually buy a home.
